Boston Red Sox Prospects are Coming

With Spring Training now in full swing (no pun intended, seriously), we’re starting to see the stars of tomorrow make an impact today. The Boston Red Sox made some solid offseason moves they almost made a huge splash by signing Juan Soto and were rumored to be in trade talks for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Their biggest moves, of course, were trading for Garrett Crochet and signing Alex Bregman.

But here’s the thing, the most important long-term pieces might be the ones already in-house, potentially forcing the Sox into tougher decisions than they expected.

Yesterday, the first three hitters in their lineup are all currently ranked in MLB’s Top 100 Prospects list, and they already have experience at the Double-A level. Usually, clubs prefer Triple-A experience, but if their hand is forced, Double-A will do. So, who are these guys?

  • OF Roman Anthony, who led off and went 1-for-3

  • 2B Kristian Campbell, who didn’t get a hit but worked a walk

  • 3B/SS Marcelo Mayer, currently hitting .455 this spring, who went 3-for-3 and finished a double shy of the cycle

Mayer is the name to watch...he might be pushing for a roster spot sooner than expected.

At 6'3", 190 lbs, Mayer is everything you want to see as a fan. He’s got gap-to-gap power, plays solid defense, and can even steal some bags. Some thought he’d already be in the big leagues, but injuries slowed down his 2023 season. However, in 2024, he proved his health was back, hitting .307 in Double-A Portland.

Now, here’s where things get interesting...the Red Sox already have a crowded infield with Rafael Devers, Trevor Story, Alex Bregman, Triston Casas, & Vaughn Grissom. So, if Mayer keeps raking, what do you do? Platoon him? Keep him in Triple-A until things sort themselves out? The wheels are already spinning.

Red Sox fans, of course, are feeling the excitement again heading into this season. If they can stay healthy, this lineup could be a nightmare for opposing pitchers. But these are great problems to have.

As a Diamondbacks fan, I fully understand what it’s like to see a wave of top prospects pushing for the big-league roster, it’s exactly what you want to see. If Anthony, Campbell, & Mayer can develop alongside Jarren Duran, Triston Casas, & Garrett Crochet, the Red Sox could be a problem for years to come.

Bet Recap: 2-2, not too bad still very much up the past week or so.
