MLB Trade Deadline Recap With Ryder Stoolie and Coach Day

ree

Another trade deadline has passed us by, and the dust has finally settled on the final transactions.

It feels like in every sport that the deadline always brings us jaw-dropping moments, but Thursday's deadline truly brought that out in the final hours.

Barstool Breakdown's Ryder Stoolie and Coach Day broke down their thoughts on some of the biggest moves made around Major League Baseball over the past few days and talk about how the moves made can benefit some of these teams immediately for the buyers, while the sellers could see success down the road.

Padres get aggressive in NL West race

Athletics get: SS Leo De Vries, RHP Braden Nett, RHP Henry Báez, RHP Eduarniel Nuñez

Padres get: RHP Mason Miller, LHP J.P. Sears

Ryder Stoolie: This is just one of five trades that A.J. Preller pulled the trigger on to help bolster the San Diego roster over the deadline week. With 22 players involved in the trades, Preller was on his Sonny Weaver grind. With one of the games top closers already on its roster in Robert Suarez, the Padres added Mason Miller who is one of the most difficult pitchers to hit in the MLB. Oh yeah, he is under team control until 2029. Mix that in with a backend stater in J.P. Sears who can help eat innings, the Padres could be set up for a nice October run. It wouldn't be fair to discredit the haul that the Athletics got in return, either. De Vries is a top prospect in all of baseball and seemed untouchable, but the switch-hitting shortstop could be part of a fun young core for years to come in Sacramento/Las Vegas. (San Diego will also get immediate contribution from Ryan O'Hearn, Ramón Laureano, Nestor Cortes, and Freddy Fermin)

Coach Day: As a Dbacks fan myself, this trade surprises me, as it seems every year the Padres are just dumping 3 to 5 top prospects. Seriously, do they have like a factory making MLB top prospects somewhere or something? BUT... from a baseball perspective, is it enough to get past the Phillies, Dodgers, or even Mets? Short answer: NO. Miller, though, is still young and under control till 2029, so that’s a plus. As for the Athletics...keep stockpiling big prospects, baby.

Carlos Correa heading back to Houston

Astros get: INF Carlos Correa, cash

Twins get: Minor League LHP Matt Mikulski

Ryder Stoolie: Is there anything better in sports than a homecoming? Carlos Correa is headed back to Houston after waiving his no-trade clause. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that Minnesota will send $33 million to help cover Correa's remaining contract. Correa is owed $96 million through 2028, with club options from 2029-2032. Correa will move to third base and try to help Houston hold of the Rangers and Mariners in the AL West race. Personally, I'm a little skeptical on Correa moving to the hot corner and being productive after being injury riddled the past few seasons. Bold moves at the deadline are what it's all about. But for the Astros, it feels like they are hoping and praying that Correa can pan out with Isaac Parades out for the season. Also, if you were on the Twins roster this week and weren't one of the 10 players traded, thoughts and prayers to you and your because that team is throwing the towel in for the future and beyond.

Coach Day: The first of two returns back to their old stomping grounds. Again, as a Dbacks fan, it's just so frustrating to see other teams always get what they want. Veteran, playoff performer, wants to be there. Shit ain't fair. Astros winning the AL West...yawn...yet again. As for the Twins: HOLY FIRE SALE, but they did well in gathering young talent.

Eugenio Suárez back on the move in trade with Mariners

Mariners get: 3B Eugenio Suárez

Diamondbacks get: 1B Tyler Locklear, RHP Hunter Cranton, RHP Juan Burgos

Ryder Stoolie: I won't act like I know as much about the Diamondbacks as Coach Day does. However, I was a bit shocked that it seemed like there were weren't more suitors involved for a guy who is on pace to hit 54 home runs. The D-Backs got a good haul back in my opinion with three top 20 prospects in return. Seattle loads up with another right-handed bat that will help their already studded power offense even more. 1 through 6 in the Mariners lineup might be the best they have had in the past 20 years. You get a fun reunion with Suàrez and Seattle, but also with him and Josh Naylor who the Mariners recently acquired from Arizona. As I said earlier, this is a good haul in return for a guy who is having a bounce back year that not many people thought he would have. The Mariners could have good value in the AL if you're a responsible gambler like myself.

Coach Day: Deep breath... Tough to see him go, but happy for Geno to get a shot at the playoffs while playing at such a high level. Some love what we got back, I personally think it's super well damn just MID. I wanted Harry Ford, plain and simple. I actually think the Dbacks got better prospects back for Merrill Kelly. For the Mariners, yes VERY scary power lineup, but also scary possible slumpers too... keep an eye on that.

Mets add strong bullpen arms and... Cedric... Mullens?

Mets get: RHP Ryan Helsley, LHP Tyler Rogers, LHP Gregory Soto, and OF Cedric Mullins

Ryder Stoolie: The Mets ended up being one of the most active teams at the deadline with three bullpen arms added and Cedric Mullens. With a lot of starting arms not available, they loaded up with guys who will get them outs in the postseason. As a Cardinals fan, I hated to see Helsley go, but he deserves to be playing competitive baseball and like the haul they got back for him. Mix that in with Rogers and Soto, those are three great arms that you will have to face. Oh yeah, and your prize for getting through those three guys will be Edwin Diaz. I worry about New York's bats as their .241 batting average ranks 22nd in the MLB. I would've liked to seen the Mets get a starter or a right-handed bat like Luis Robert instead of a left-handed bat and whatever value that Mullens is going to add.

Coach Day: They are being called winners by many accounts, and I do agree, getting Cedric Mullins was a nice get. But they were rumored to be in the running for Seth Lugo, Merrill Kelly, and Zac Gallen, only to have a huge swing & miss on all 3 apparently.

Mets are just always gonna Met, boys. - Coach Day

Phillies bolster bullpen with addition of Jhoan Duran

Phillies get: RHP Jhoan Duran

Twins get: RHP Mick Abel, C Eduardo Tait

Ryder Stoolie: Well, the fake hug sure is awkward now as Jhoan Duran found out he was being traded to Philadelphia about 24 hours later on Wednesday night. However, when a guy who has the potential of recording the final out to help you clinch the World Series is available, you go get him. I liked this deal along with the acquisition of Harrison Bader. I think Red October is going to be here to stay in 2025. A legit game-changing arm mixed in with one of the league's best offenses is trouble for the rest of the National League.

Coach Day: Unlike the Mets, the Phillies went after the BEST reliever being shopped. From who, oh just guess? The Twins! (since they traded half their damn team today). Duran is a game-changer, and with the lineup they have, the Dodgers might wanna buckle down... 'Cause Philly has motion.

Editor Note: A huge thank you to Coach CD for helping me with this story. I thought it would be great to get multiple thoughts on an eventful week in Major League Baseball. Chris is kicking ass with the blogs and the rest of us are just here.
