LIV Tour Continues Generational Mickey Mouse Run

Yesterday the LIV Tour announced a major change to their 2026 competitive season: moving forward, they will now compete in 72-hole tournaments. So, for those who only see Roman numerals in Super Bowl logos, “LIV” stands for 54. Yep… the tour literally named 54 Tour will now play 72. Another L stacked on during an offseason from hell for the tour.
It all really began when reports came out about the tour taking a major financial hit, estimated around half a billion lost. Though, let’s be honest, I doubt the PIF gives two shits about that. To compare, that loss to them is like us needing to pay for an oil change or get new tires. It sucks, it’s annoying, but we’ll live. They sadly will, too.
Another domino to fall was Greg Norman not getting renewed. The original loud advocate for the league, and a huge name used as part of the recruiting pitch to players. Norman stepping away feels like another sign that maybe his “golf integrity” was never really that deep to begin with.
Then there’s the lack of big-name signings this offseason. While LIV started with a bang, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, and the later additions of Cameron Smith and maybe their biggest grab of all, Jon Rahm… the 2025 offseason has been very quiet. Many thought Rahm would open the door for others to follow, but no major names have shown interest. They’ve reportedly struck out with guys like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, and Ludvig Åberg. The combo of massive financial losses and declining star interest is catching up to them.
So all of these issues have now led LIV to conform to the very tradition they built their league on bashing… 72-hole tournaments. Once again fueling the idea of how much of a Mickey Mouse league this really is. A generational run of back walking continues. Ohh sooo… does this mean the tour is now the LXXII Tour? Probably not, leaving it as “LIV” just adds another notch to the stupidity leaderboard. The hope is that 72-hole tournaments will help their world ranking legitimacy and open a new recruiting pitch, but Rory McIlroy has already chimed in basically saying… yeah, good luck with that.
It just feels like the league is scrambling (swear no pun intended) to keep its relevance in the golf world. But it’s hard to ignore a half-a-billion dollar loss in one season. Especially when the rest of the sport... YouTube, social media, and yes, even their sworn enemy the PGA TOUR are all seeing major increases in viewership and attendance. SO HOW does LIV manage to go backwards? And it’s not like the PGA is some perfect angel, but boy does it do golf way better than LIV. No denying that.
All of this just shows again how massive of a failure this league has been. And the worst part is we, the fans, continue to get screwed. Add it to the list, right? Streaming services (YouTube TV, I’m talking to you), NFL/CFB games in other countries, and now only seeing the world’s best golfers together ONLY four times a year.
Yet this league will somehow keep hanging around, the bane of golf fans’ existence. They’re Rocky, taking every punch and still standing back up. Bloody and bruised from the 2025 season and offseason, I will be here screaming from the mountaintops with every golf fan when LIV... or maybe now “LXXII”, inevitably makes their next grasp for importance & stretches into weekly-season territory. We all know it’s coming. What a joke of a league LIV keeps proving itself to be, more and more each year.
