Going to the FREAKIN OLYMPICS! LETS GO BABY! U.S.A HOCKEY IS DO OR DIE!
As I start this off, I’m currently headed to Italy to see my first Olympic action in person. With NHL players finally back in Olympic play, it felt like a no-brainer to take the trip. Thankfully it was Italy too, which made it much easier to convince the wife to fly across the pond, as they say, to see a hockey game. A once-in-a-lifetime experience is on deck Thursday as we’ll be boots on the ground for Latvia vs. U.S.A.
One of the most shocking parts of planning this trip was the overall affordability (let’s call that a word, as grammar may be different from the air anyway). We’re staying with a friend outside of Milan at the foot of the Dolomites, so we’re really only up for the game night in Milan & then, of course, a night in Rome or Venice. The true worry was whether the players were still going to go, with arena questions swirling all fall, especially since I got the game tickets pretty far in advance.
Over the past few months as a sports fan, I’ve turned to the belief of just go man. Yes, it costs money, but seriously, why are you working to earn it if you aren’t taking the time to enjoy it? I’m not buying Kraken(Seattle) season tickets or going to every Zags(Gonzaga) game, but I’m doing my best to have the experiences we want. For this one, like I said, being in Italy & then finding out Tate McRae was dating Jack Hughes peaked the wife’s interest level and made for a much smoother convincing argument on my end.
As we hit the Olympic area and check out all there is to see, I’m going to do my best to document it all for everyone, maybe even inspire some of you to take that trip or see that stadium or team you’ve always wanted to. I know my wife will be putting together a vlog of our adventures as well.
As for the game itself, I’m about to throw on Miracle to get into the right mindset for the boys on the ice Thursday. With some of the top players in the world ready to suit up for the U.S., expectations are high to compete for a gold medal. Of course, as always, Canada is the favorite, though only slightly over Team U.S.A. We’ll look to turn the games in our favor with deep goaltending & a physical yet fast style of play. I’m hoping fellow Arizona native Captain Auston Matthews has a big game, leading the way to gold.
