Rob Pelinka strikes again with a deal that left some Laker fans confused. The Lakers drafted Dalton Knecht with the 17th pick of the first round in this year's NBA draft, and so far, he's impressed Laker fans with his ability to come on the floor and drop buckets. He was a kid who spent 4 years at lesser programs and exploded onto the scene in his 5th year overall, but 1st at Tennessee developed late into a full-sized guard/wing capable of lighting it up from outside. In the in-season tournament against the Jazz, Knecht poured in 37 points including 22 straight and tying a rookie record with 9 made 3's.
I was pumped when the Lakers drafted Knecht, I thought he would be able to contribute right away, and he did, but as a ball knower, I'm pumped about this trade to get Mark Williams and how it sets up the Lakers roster. I say as a ball knower because it's likely that many Laker fans are mad or confused about giving up a guy who seems to have such a high floor and potential for a high ceiling but what they're missing is that the Lakers just got a 23 year old big, averaging 16-10, and a guy who has the longest reach in the NBA. A guy that's going to pair well with Luka and Lebron for this year and Luka for the next 5-10 if he remains healthy.
The biggest question mark on Williams is his availability. Having only played in 85 games in his first 3 seasons, the injury bug seems to be nagging for the new Laker big. However, I believe a lot of that is the way Charlotte was conditioning Williams to be a staple of their lineup and lack of important games for Charlotte in general.
I won't go into major detail on the trade because my brain still can't believe they stole Luka from the Mavs but I will give you the NBA script I received off the press this morning. Follow closely.
The NBA's ratings were laughable early in the year, so in turn, they made the call to get Luka to LA with a young and budding big man to help Lebron James bring his son along and make one more run at the Finals. The Cavaliers are one of the best, if not the best team in the Eastern Conference and just added DeAndre Hunter to an already impressive team. So the way I see it, the Lakers meet the Cavaliers in the finals, The Lakers close it out in the 6th game in Cleveland with 4 garbage time points from Bronny James and Lebron retires on the court he began with. We got robbed of a Kobe Vs Lebron finals because of Dwight Howard so to make up for it all and close the story of Lebron James, he sails off after his 5th finals win and robs Cleveland of their 2nd championship.
