Just Another Reason to Love Princess Diana

ree

Princess Diana aka the People's Princess is the most iconic woman to be a part of the Royal Family. Everyone knows the general story about Diana. She married King Charles (prince at the time) at 20, they had 2 kids (William and Harry), and then they divorced because of Charles' affair. I won't speak about her tragic death or the conspiracies surrounding it, because that could be a whole blog on its own (and probably will be so keep an eye out). Although there were marital issues behind closed doors, prior to the divorce, Diana won over the hearts of the people with her grace, charisma, charitable donations, and sense of normalcy.

She tried to raise her boys as normal as possible and would break protocol to make it happen. She made sure to send them to school outside the palace, bring them to fast food restaurants, the movies, amusement parks and not take any special treatment so they could relate to their peers. She even ran barefoot in a mother's race at Harry's school when it is a huge no no for royals to take their shoes off in public.

Not only was she a fantastic mother and an anti-royal royal, but she was a fashion icon

She was already breaking protocol at her first public engagement with Charles by wearing black dress which is usually reserved for somber occasions in the Royal Family. Not only was it black but it was low cut causing her to receive judgement the whole night.

Another black dress that sparked controversy among the royals but was the absolutely stunning "Travolta Dress." She wore this to a White House visit and received criticism once again for it being low cut and black.

Everybody knows the Eagles jacket. She wore this to pick up her boys from school once. She received criticism for this look because it was too casual and too American lol. In reality she liked it because she was just a girl, and her favorite colors were green and silver.

A trend setter 20 years ago with the biker shorts and big sweatshirt. Even though she was divorced from Charles at this point, she was still expected to follow Royal protocol. She essentially said, "Fuck you, I'll wear what I want."

Her most iconic look of all time is what is now known as the "Revenge Dress." She wore this dress to an event the night the same night Charles' tell-all came out in which he confessed that he had been cheating on Diana with his now wife Camilla. Reportedly, she had owned this dress for a long time but thought it was too daring to wear during her marriage.

Okay, now back to the actual reason for this blog. Obviously, we all know she is iconic, but learned something about her recently that just gave me another reason to love Princess Diana. She once went to one of London's most iconic gay bars dressed in drag with Freddie Mercury. She and her friends (including Mercury) were hanging out one night watching TV when Diana asked the rest of the group what their plans for the rest of the night were. They told her, figuring she wouldn't want or be able to go, but she requested to join them. They were trying to figure out how it would work because she was the most recognizable person in London, potentially even the world. Freddie eventually convinced them that it could be done and to let Diana have some fun. That's when they dressed her up in an army jacket, dark aviators, and a leather hat. Apparently, she looked like an "eccentrically dressed male model," and they decided they could get away with it.

And, it worked. They were able to make their way through the crowds on the street and eventually into the bar. When they were in there, Diana and Freddie were giggling so much that they had pulled it off. They stayed for one drink and then Diana headed back to Kensington Palace like nothing happened. She even said she would love to do it again. Whether they did that or not is unknown.

Diana becoming an early advocate for the LGBTQ community and breaking the stigma surrounding aids by shaking hands with a dying patient in the 80s is just another way she broke protocol and went against the objections of the Royal Family.

Long Live Princess Di and Fuck the Royal Family. Thank You.
