Guess Who's Back, Back Again? Mark Mitchell's Back, Tell A Friend!

After much deliberation, and even a commitment to another school, Mark Mitchell has decided to come back to CoMo for a final year of eligibility!

Now, for those of you don't know, here's a quick recap of how this all went down.

On August 21, it was announced that a group of athletes (including Mitchell) would be eligible for another year of college basketball as a result of a preliminary injunction. The next day, Mitchell committed to Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats what was rumored to be for about $6,000,000.

Not a bad pay day for a player who was selected two times to the all-conference teams and led Missouri with 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last year.

Fortunately for Mizzou fans, the SEC already had a policy in place about the craziness in college athletics and players who had been granted these ghost windows of transfer portals, players who had been trying to come back to transfer within conferences after signing pro contracts.

The policy states about intraconference transfer laws says schools that play athletes who transferred within the SEC but outside their sport's "regular" transfer window will have their head coach suspended for half of the regular season, be fined 50% of their sport's annual budget and be stripped of voting priveleges on "items of Conference business."

Late last week, there started to be rumblings that after this was announced that Mitchell was a little nervous about what could happen if he stayed in Lexington and that a return to Columbia to Dennis Gates and Co. was looking more and more likely.

However, if you know Mizzou's luck, nobody was counting their chickens before they hatched.

Gates sent out the bat signal Monday morning confirming all the rumors about Mitchell coming back to the team.

Mitchell did have the choice of returning to Columbia, transferring outside of the SEC, or go ahead and sign a pro contract.

Now, he will await another official ruling to see if he will be eligible at Mizzou for a fifth-year, but I would assume he knew that coming back here would give him the best chance to be ruled eligible and has plenty of leverage to use to the NCAA for being ruled eligible.

Safe to say 1 Champions Drive in Columbia, Missouri will be a madhouse for SEC opponents this winter.
