This Bubble just won't Burst!

We are now into conference tournament time for the mid-majors, while the power conferences finish up their regular season slate. Each year around this time, we start to see a clear picture of what each team needs to do in their conference tournaments to solidify their spot. But this year is a bit different...it's becoming more of a mess day by day.

We have about 10-15 power conference teams sitting "on the bubble" right now, and they just keep us questioning who they truly are. For instance, you have Wake Forest, a 20-win team, needing a frantic comeback to beat an under-.500 Notre Dame, then following it up with a chance to prove they’re tournament-worthy against Duke...only to lose by over 30 points.

In the Big Ten, we have Indiana, Nebraska, and Ohio State taking one step forward, then two back. Texas gets run out of the gym by Georgia, only to follow it up with a road win over Mississippi State. Oklahoma does the same thing, pulling off a big win, followed by a shocking loss. The bubble continues to confuse us all.

Again this week, teams are being given chances to firmly place themselves into tournament play, but will they take advantage? You have North Carolina playing Duke, Oklahoma facing Missouri, Arkansas against Mississippi State...the list goes on. And, of course, bid stealers can always throw a wrench into things.

But this year feels very different...we have a ton of teams that at times look deserving, and then the next game, they can’t even hang with a sub-.500 squad.

If you’re confused or think I’m way off base on this one, let’s take a look at this chart for some hard evidence.

If we start to throw in a couple of mid-major schools, it gets even messier. It just seems like this year, we’re going to have a lot of teams with major arguments both for themselves and against the competition.

This year, conference tournament week could be even bigger than years past, with so many teams looking to throw the bubble talk aside and snag the Auto Bid. Of course, that’s easier said than done, but we’ve seen it happen before...with Oregon State in 2021 or NC State last year stealing bids and coming out of nowhere.
