THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT IN MEMPHIS
Four games into the NBA season, and the Memphis Grizzlies are giving their fans plenty of reasons to be excited about what's being built in Memphis.
The Memphis Grizzlies are 4-0 for just the SECOND time in franchise history, and I am officially trying my hardest not to get carried away. But holy hell, this team is making that difficult.
Memphis just walked into Utah on Monday night and came away with a 110-105 win, their third victory in four days and third straight on the road. Second-year man Cedric Coward chipped in 16 points and 11 rebounds, and suddenly this team that everyone expected to be rebuilding is looking like one of the most entertaining young squads in basketball.
And can we talk about TY JEROME?!
The man opened the season with 45, 28 and 31 points in his first three games and was rewarded with Western Conference Player of the Week honors. Just an absolutely ridiculous start to the year.
Then there's 19-year-old Cam Boozer, who already looks like he belongs. The shooting hasn't even been particularly great, but who cares? His rebounding, defense and leadership have been better than advertised. He's impacting winning basketball games as a TEENAGER. That's what has me so excited about this kid.
And he's already got a game-winner under his belt.
The beautiful part is it's not just one or two guys carrying this team.
Memphis knocked off Sacramento on Sunday without Zach Edey, giving the big fella some extra rest following last season's ankle surgery so he could go Monday in the back-to-back. Isaiah Stewart gave them 13 points Sunday night, while fellow offseason additions Jerami Grant and Quinten Post stepped up with contributions against Utah.
Different night. Different guys. Same result.
4-0.
Look, I know it's four games. I KNOW. Nobody needs to remind me that the NBA season is 82 games long. But as a Grizzlies fan who heard this talk about having to expect a rebuild, how the hell am I supposed to not be giddy right now?
The chemistry is already coming together, the young guys are competing their asses off, and this team is genuinely FUN to watch.
They're also getting their longest road trip of the season out of the way early and have already rattled off three straight wins away from Memphis. One more stop in Portland on Thursday before heading home.
And honestly, whether this team wins 50 games or eventually comes back down to earth, I'm already buying into what they're building because they're showing us what is possible. Oh yeah, they also have seven first-round picks to play with...
So here's my pitch. If you've been thinking about getting into the NBA and don't have a team, COME JOIN US. Seriously. The Grizzlies are young, exciting, play their asses off and have the kind of energy that makes you want to tune in every single night.
And a quick shoutout to my brother Reed Jones from the Nothin' But Net podcast and fellow blogger here at Barstool Breakdown. Reed showed Memphis some love in his preseason preview and again on this week's episode of Nothin' But Net. The man saw something brewing.
Four games into what was supposed to be a rebuilding season, Memphis is undefeated, and I'm sitting here wondering just how good this young group can become.
