NCAA Baseball Weekend Delivers!

What a freakin’ weekend of baseball! Also, to add even more to the storyline, it isn’t done yet, with still six more super regional spots to be filled today in win-or-go-home games. This weekend we already saw four national seeds eliminated, with another six on the ropes today. The biggest shocker was the erasing of the number 1 and 2 seeds.

Let’s jump off by first addressing the first ever national seed to not even get to their regional final since the tournament expanded to the 64-team format. The Vanderbilt Commodores just did not have it this weekend, including needing late-inning heroics just to win their one game. The bats just weren’t there, a problem they faced most of the season. They were then eliminated by 4-seed Wright State on Sunday morning.

This was not the end of the embarrassing moments for the SEC... Next up, we have the dismissal of #2-seeded Texas, who lost twice to in-state foe UTSA Roadrunners an American Conference team that has been a wonderful story all season long. Of course, this is a shocking development, and for those who don’t fully understand the regionals format—this would be like 1-seeds losing in the round of 64 or 32. Vanderbilt’s would be closer to 64, since they didn’t even reach the regional final.

Here’s another layer to the madness: not only were these the #1 and #2 national seeds, but they were also the SEC regular season and tournament champions. A HUGE blow for the SEC, though they still have some teams in great spots.

Today, we also have the potential for historic levels of shock factor. The #6-seeded LSU Tigers are in a win-or-go-home situation with Little Rock, who finished 8th in the Ohio Valley Conference. Their stats ending the season are jaw dropping!

Then we have #10 Ole Miss, who’s battled back to force a win-or-go-home against Murray State. We’ve also got #14 Tennessee and unseeded Oklahoma, both repping the SEC and trying to advance. All together, all 6 games today involve national seeds.

This may be one of the wildest first weekends of the NCAA baseball tournament all time. We’ve seen higher seeds fall before, but not at this rate. And now to have six win-or-go-home games on Monday to wrap the weekend? Insane. For reference, we usually see about two or three.

I’ve been trying to tell people all season, college baseball deserves so, so, so much more love. Tune in today. Maybe we’ll see something even more historic.
