Art Rooney II Even Considering Russel Wilson Over Justin Fields Is Laughable And Yet Another Example Of Him Making Mediocrity The Standard In Pittsburgh

"I have a sense, and look, I share their frustration. I mean it was very disappointing the way we ended the season, so I understand that. I understand why people are mad. All I can say is, actions speak louder than words and we've got to get better." -Arthur Rooney II on Steelers fan's frustration.

I don't buy a single word of the sentiment above from the Steelers President. It's not because of the collapse we witnessed out of the 2024 Steelers, not because the Steelers continue to move forward with Tomlin, and not even because the Steelers haven't won a playoff game since 2015. It's because the idiot pictured above is debating whether or not to sign a 36-year-old quarterback way past his prime or a 26-year-old quarterback whose potential can at least be spun to a positive perspective.

How many more times do we have to watch Russel Wilson spin to nowhere, 5 yards in the opposite direction, and get sacked to realize that Russy is washed? His mobility is gone and when he does take off with room, his decision-making is questionable, to say the least.

For instance, running over a Bengals defender instead of stepping out of bounds.

Or how about when he thought he was Josh Allen and got popped in the red zone against Baltimore? (I think Fields scores this by the way)

His inefficiency in the Red Zone was also laughable this season, ranking 21st of all quarterbacks, and completing only 50% of his passes in the red area. The previous is one example but in case you need further proof, here ya go.

The reasoning behind pursuing a deal with a veteran quarterback compared to a younger guy is usually because the vet has better decision-making. I just gave you 3 crucial moments in which Russ made terrible decisions, 2 of which were due to his LACK of mobility.

The one thing Russ still and has always had is a beautiful moonball that drops right into the pocket of the intending receiver more times than not. However, in an offense that lacks creativity, prides itself on a shitty run game behind a young developing offensive line, and sees most drives go run, run, pass, punt, you just don't get the chance to use that enough.

Wilson without a doubt is the more expensive option because Fields still has to prove himself as a starter in the league but his skill set matches what the Steelers' identity has traditionally been and the direction they seem to be building back towards. For those non-believers in the right arm of Justin Fields, watch this and tell me there isn't elite arm talent there and I'll call you a liar.

"We've got a whole quarterback room to fill, and so there's jobs open in there. I wouldn't be surprised if we look in the draft as well either this year or next, and so that's got to be the priority." -Art Rooney II on the status of the Steelers QB room

If we have a full room to fill why not put your faith in the guy that's A DECADE younger and likely the cheaper option? Especially if you plan to turn to the draft to fill the room, go with the younger guy with mobility, and see what he's got. PLEASE! If it doesn't work then just bite the bullet and take a losing season for a chance at finding our future guy under center.

This is all cannon fodder and pointless begging to be honest. It's become clear that Rooney II's goal in Pittsburgh is to maintain the middle of the road, be just good enough to make the dance, but hit the exit before the first song ends.

Wilson is the guy for that dream of mediocrity, as is Tomlin who again, hasn't won a playoff game since 2015. So I'll don my Sussy For Russy shirt and pretend we've got a chance but deep down I know we're fucked.

The Standard Is The Standard, and that standard is mediocrity.
