2025 MOVIE HYPE METER: MARCH EDITION

ree

The mantra for how bad movies in 2024 was "Survive Until '25", so let's continue talking about 2025 movies. So here is my March movie release hype meter which is a pretty stacked month for movies.

MICKEY 17

  • Director: Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Parasite)

  • Cast: Robert Pattinson (Good Time, Batman), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Nope)

  • Release: March 7th

Yeah, this movie might end up winning Best Picture next year. Bong Joon-ho is one of the best working directors and Robert Pattinson is legit one of the best actors working and is massively underrated as well. Factor in an amazing ensemble cast consisting of Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Naomi Ackie with a sci-fi setting/plot, and this movie should be one of the best next year.

HYPE METER: 10/10

THE ELECTRIC STATE

  • Director: The Russo Brothers (Community, Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame)

  • Cast: Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes), Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World)

  • Release: March 14th

Ok, this movie has a truly STACKED cast and if you wanna see how stacked it is just look instead of me having to type it all (GRONK IS IN IT). It's based on a very popular sci-fi book set in an alternate dystopian 1994. So I have only one opinion on this movie: it's either going to be really good or really bad. No in-between. For a movie with a $320 MILLION budget, I hope it's the first.

HYPE METER: 8.5/10

OPUS

  • Director: Mark Anthony Green

  • Cast: Ayo Edibiri (The Bear, Inside Out 2), John Malkovich (In The Line of Fire, Being John Malkovich)

  • Release: March 14th

Those two as leads in an A24 thriller? I smell a 4.5-5 stars Letterboxd rating looming.

HYPE METER: 9/10

SNOW WHITE

  • Director: Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man)

  • Cast: Rachel Zegler (West Side Story, Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbird & Snakes), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman)

  • Release: March 21st

This movie has two things going for it and two things going against it. For the two things going for it, it's the fact that Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Barbie) wrote the script and Rachel Zegler is an absolutely amazing singer and good actress. The two things going against it hurt more than the good things: using CGI for the dwarves and not casting actual actors and Gal Gadot truly might be the worst actress I have ever seen.

HYPE METER: 5/10

DEATH OF A UNICORN

  • Director: Alex Scharfman

  • Cast: Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, Wet Hot American Summer), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday, Scream)

  • Release: March 28th

A dark fantasy horror comedy with those two, Will Poulter, Tea Leoni, and Richard E. Grant? I'm ready to see the craziness that ensues and go straight from laughing to shock.

HYPE METER: 7.5/10

HONORABLE MENTION: BLACK BAG (CATE BLANCHETT, MICHAEL FASSENBENDER)
