2025 MOVIE HYPE METER: JANUARY EDITION

Wow, I have another interest outside of the NBA! Shocking right? Well, one thing you may not know about me is I'm a huge movie buff. Release years, cast, rankings, everything. So with 2025 being an absolutely LOADED year for movies, I'll be writing about which ones I'm looking forward to each month and ranking them on a hype meter. Here's January.
WOLFMAN
Director: Leigh Whannell (Insidious: Chapter 3, The Invisible Man)
Cast: Christopher Abbott (First Man, Girls), Julia Garner (Ozark)
Release: January 17th (go see it!!)
Universal monsters are back!! This is a darker reboot of the original 1941 film. Now look, I'm not a huge horror movie guy. Never was and probably never will be. But when it comes to monsters I will always be there ever since watching Brendan Fraser's Mummy growing up. Julia Garner is a truly phenomenal actress and I'm ready to start seeing her venture into more roles now that Ozark is over.
HYPE METER: 7/10
PRESENCE
Director: Stephen Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, The Ocean's Trilogy, Logan Lucky)
Cast: Lucy Liu (Ally McBeal, Kill Bill), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems)
Release: January 25th
The premise of this movie is that "a family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they're not alone." It's a supernatural horror movie so no thanks. Just like I said above, it's not my cup of tea. BUT it is being directed by one of my favorite directors in Soderbergh. Ocean's 11 is legit one of my 4 favorite movies so I will be there just for him.
HYPE METER: 4/10
FLIGHT RISK
Director: Mel Gibson (Braveheart)
Cast: Mark Wahlberg (Boogie Nights, The Other Guys), Topher Grace (That 70's Show, Spider-Man 3)
Release: January 24th
Mark Wahlberg as some semi-bald schmuck taking over a plane with Eric Foreman as a nerdy dude? Sign me up immediately
HYPE METER: 8/10
YOU'RE CORDIALLY INVITED
Director: Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors)
Cast: Will Ferrell (Elf, Anchorman), Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde, Walk The Line)
Release: January 30th
I will watch any movie with Will Ferrell in it despite him being on a bit of a dry spell as far as comedy movies go. Seeing him go one-on-one with Reese Witherspoon in this movie makes it even more compelling as there will be hijinks and more. Jimmy Tatro also is such an underrated comedic actor and I love that he's in this.
HYPE METER: 9/10
COMPANION
Director: Drew Hancock
Cast: Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, The Boogeyman), Jack Quaid (The Boys, My Adventures with Superman)
Release: January 31st
Now THIS is the type of horror film I will see. More of a psychological thriller or traditional slasher movie as opposed to some paranormal/demonic one. Sophie Thatcher is one of the fastest-rising "scream queens" in the game today. Jack Quaid is a legit great actor and I love seeing him in more things outside of just shows. He's one of the GOOD nepo babies.
