I’m going to start this blog off with a statement: Barstool events are unmatched. These competitions that bring all the different ends of Barstool together, they’re can’t-miss content. It’s a chance for you as a stoolie to see more into various personalities you maybe don’t find time for. And then you mix in the little rivalries between them? Chef’s kiss!
Last week I hit y’all with the first edition of the Writer Cup power rankings off their morning matches(Check here: https://www.barstoolbreakdown.com/post/writer-cup-day-1-power-rankings). Now I’ll rank the afternoon matches of alternate shot, which took off with the back 9. Of course, if you haven’t finished the matches, pause, check them out, and then head back here with no worries on spoilers. This course, I’ll say it again...looks pretty damn tough & even too tough for some of these golfers. And with alternate shot, sometimes you’re put into spots that make you look worse than you’re really playing. Still, I feel these rankings stay true.
Injured:
PFT
I can’t fairly rank this man. For those who don’t know, this was filmed during The Dozen Final Four in Boston. I was there in person, and this man could barely stand. At this point I just can’t, in good faith, rank him anywhere. He could barely trivia… let alone be expected to swing a golf club!
Big Cat
If we could, Big Cat may be lower. His performance in the afternoon was scary bad. I mean, I know we’ve all been there, one bad shot turns into two, three, and so on. He even spoke about it on The Yak. He plays off the frustration well, gotta give him credit for that. But for the love of God, turn off this poor man’s shot tracer.
Dave Portnoy
After finding some good shots in the morning, the afternoon was UGLY! If you haven’t watched the Big Cat/Sas vs. Portnoy/Jerry match, just be ready for some truly disgusting golf. It’s a car wreck in slow motion that you can’t look away from.
Lil Sas
Now yes, his teammate was Big Cat, but Sas also wasn’t as good in the morning. His swing has potential, and if he got back into the game he could be pretty good. We do need him vs. Francis in the singles match. That could feed stoolie families for years to come.
Jersey Jerry
Jerry may have looked good at times, but he was just playing with the 3 worst-ranked golfers. He won’t be able to hide in his singles match. That said, Jerry’s game is much better than in the past. Now we’re heading into the first small gap.
Biz
Biznasty is a better golfer than he showed today, but this was not his match at all. I also worry about him in singles since he leans on his partner a lot in times of need. Either way, his vibes are always top-tier. If you aren’t a Spittin’ Chiclets fan, you need to get on it now!
Trent
Trent looked a lot like the old days of breaking 100. He put Frankie in tough spot after tough spot. Now we know...or at least Foreplay followers know, his game has really improved the past year or so, but it didn’t show today. Kirk may rattle poor Trent a bit too much to focus?
Whitney
This was a letdown. If you’re a sandbagger connoisseur, you know Whit has game! Today he would’ve been more useful back on the ice because his golf game was non-existent. If he can get out of his head for singles, though, he’s a pure weapon waiting to be unleashed. Now we hit the next prominent gap in the rankings.
Arian
Yes, his partner was playing hurt so his ball placement wasn’t always helpful, but still, he didn’t look as sharp as he did in the first Writer Cup, or even his morning match. I still believe he’s a top 5 golfer in this group, and he can show it in singles.
Hank
Lockwood had himself a pretty good day. He stepped up in the big match, finally getting to be in his own sandbagger. He’s paired well with Francis the first two rounds, but now comes singles, his time to prove all the hours on the simulator have paid off. Here comes the final major gap in the rankings.
Frankie
Another guy maybe hurt a bit by his partner’s shots, yes. Still, the guys in front of him played better overall. He could be the #1 guy on this list after singles, I think he’s that good. But on this day, he was outplayed.
Beef
Okay, so there may be clamoring for him to be higher since he had some clutch shots. But he also had some tough ones too. His play alongside Riggs helped them to a win. I’m interested to see who he gets in singles.
Yands
Okay, this was the Yands I thought we’d see in the morning matches. As I said, I was left disappointed the first time. But paired with Kirk, he had some really good shots that put his squad in the win column. Some may even call it a must-win. Whoever gets him in singles better be ready for the chirp god.
Francis
The comeback is real and it is wonderful! For those who didn’t see the first Writer Cup, it was a mental disaster for Francis. After two long years of sitting on that performance, he’s returned with a chip strong as oak on that shoulder. If not for the #1 ranked guy here, he’d hands down be the leader of his team.
Kirk
This ranking is deserved alone because of that one shot, it was incredible. But that wasn’t it. He found it and looked like a great partner with Yands too. You know he’s always going to bring the energy, but he also brings the swing.
Riggs
This one’s an easy #1 again. Riggs has been great in all phases of his game. Even when he was in a tough spot, he put it right back in play and kept his team equal or ahead. Whoever gets him in singles better be ready for a war, because he’s not giving anything away right now.
Well...All that’s left is the singles matches. These are shaping up to be a classic main event. The potential clashes are get ya popcorn-ready entertainment. Kirk vs. Riggs, Francis vs. Sas, Portnoy vs. Big Cat, the possibilities are endless. Anything we get will be great, but those have to be some dream matchups. I’ll say it again: if you haven’t gotten into the Writer Cup, catch up ASAP!
