What Is The Worst Sports Moment Of Your Life?

ree

Sports weave themselves into our lives in ways that are hard to explain, becoming something far bigger than just scores or standings. They give us moments of joy that feel almost magical, the kind that bring people together and create memories that last for years with improbable comebacks, buzzer-beaters, championship runs that always remind us why we care so much in the first place.

But with all that joy comes the heartbreak, the crushing losses and painful moments that fans never really forget. I saw a tweet on my timeline this week about the worst sports moments in a persons life. I decided that the Barstool universe has so many different fandoms from across the country, that it would be interesting to get stories on this.

I haven't been around for a while due to work and other life events, but this blog dives into those experiences, the ones that made us hurt, because sometimes the toughest memories say just as much about our love for sports as the happiest ones. Enjoy.

I will start with mine before getting to the one's you actually care about.

RYDER STOOLIE'S WORST SPORTS MEMORY: BOSTICK'S MISTAKE COST PACKERS CHANCE AT SUPER BOWL APPEARANCE (Packers 22, Seahawks 28) — There were plenty of options for me. As a Grizzlies, Packers, Mizzou, and Cardinals fan, I have seen some dark shit in my days as has everyone else. January 18, 2015 will forever be hard to replace, though. 19-year-old me was heartbroken watching the collapse in Seattle happen slowly. Seeing Brandon Bostick freeze up as the onside kick went into the air is a moment that will stick with me forever. Instead of doing his job and blocking, Bostick went up for the onside kick and it boinks off his helmet while Jordy Nelson is standing there waiting and the Seahawks recover. Seattle goes down and scores, gets a crazy two-point conversion, the Packers get a game-tying field goal and fall in overtime. One onside kick recovery away from seeing Aaron Rodgers in his second Super Bowl. This matchup would've been against Tom Brady. What could've been, and instead Pete Carroll ended up throwing it on the 1-yard line. I said some bad things about Bostick that I regret, and hope knows that I have forgiven him if he ever reads this.

Ignore the YouTube title, it was the only one that could work.

WHITE BOY RICK'S WORST SPORTS MEMORY: AARON RODGERS FINDS RANDALL COBB TO CLINCH THE NFC NORTH (Packers 33, Bears 28) — A big thanks to WBR for reaching back out to me with his worst memory albeit it's one of my favorite memories. Aaron Rodgers had suffered a broken collarbone earlier in the season and the Boogeyman came back in a must-win game with the NFC North on the line at Soldier Field. Facing 4th and 8 with :46 seconds left, Rodgers took a snap with the game on the line, with a nice blitz pick up from John Kuhn on Julius Peppers, Rodgers was able to escape just a bit enough to his left to see a wide open Randall Cobb streaking in the middle of the field. Ballgame. Packers win the North.

"4th and 8 Rodgers to Cobb on Chris Conte’s blown coverage. It was Week 17 for a playoff spot. First time in my life the Bears had a good offense. I was 13 watching with friends and legit just sat on the floor staring at the TV for hours afterward." — WBR

JAKE MALASEK'S WORST SPORTS MEMORY: LATE GAME COLLAPSE LEADS TO FURMAN DEFEATING VIRGINIA IN MARCH MADNESS (Furman 68, Virginia 67) — Another thanks to Malasek who responded back to my request. Big Malasek guy and happy for his success he is seeing with Virginia on the grid iron this fall. However, I was kind of surprised he went with this game over the No. 1 seed collapse game, but that's the beauty of asking. Up 67-63 with :12 left, Furman knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to two points. A turnover by Virginia following the make, led to a three-point make from JP Puegues with two seconds left to advance the No. 13 seed Paladins to the next round.

"Furman UVA march madness buzzer beater @ a casino in Columbus. The clips out there. I think Portnoy learned my name that day." — Jake Malasek

Here is said clip:

DERIK FROM THE CHAT'S WORST SPORTS MEMORY: LEBRON RATTLES GILBERT ARENAS AT FREE THROW LINE AS CAVS WIN ON GAME-WINNING 3 TO WIN PLAYOFF SERIES (Cleveland 115, Washington 113) — LeBron James was just a 21-year-old when he went up to Gilbert Arenas at the free throw line with Arenas having a chance to put the Wizards up three points in a playoff series they were trailing 3-2. James goes up to Arenas, whispers something to him and he clanks the free throw off the iron. Cleveland comes down the court and Damon Jones knocks down what would be the game-winning 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds remaining. Safe to say DFTC was not disappointed to see the LeBron 10-point streak end on Thursday night.

"I was at the game where LeBron whispered in Gilbert Arenas' ear at the free throw line. I was devastated by what I saw. This was Agent O... the same man that gave Kobe 60 in LA. And he folded on me right when it was time to take off. I might’ve been like 11 or 12 at the time. I cried A LOT that night. I hate LeBron because of it." — DFTC

CAROLINE'S WORST SPORTS MEMORY: DOUBLE DOINK ENDS THE CHICAGO SEASON (Chicago 15, Philadelphia 16) —  All sports fans know this one. The infamous double doink. I'll hand it over to Caroline to talk about her experience. "The day was January 6, 2019. It had been 8 years since the last time the Bears were in the playoffs. We snuck our way into the Wild Card game. The game was going perfectly fine. It was close. The bears were actually ahead at halftime. The second half had some more action and stress. The Bears and Eagles went back and forth with scoring. Both teams failing on two point conversions. I had hope. There was a minute left in the game and the Bears were driving. We made it to field goal range and spiked the ball. this was it. We were going to beat the defending Super Bowl champs. Cody Parkey made his way to the field and kicked through the uprights just to be iced. After the time out, he kicks, it’s looking great, it hits the left upright, then the cross bar, then falls into the end zone. It's over. The Bears lose in gut wrenching fashion. When this game happened, I was on a ski trip with my dad and we watched the game in our room. We watched the ending in silence. We didn’t know what to do with ourselves. We went out to eat still in our bears gear and so many people stopped at our table and just said 'I'm so sorry'."

PICK 6 ALYSSA'S WORST SPORTS MEMORY: CHIEFS, KYLE ORTON SPOIL PACKERS PERFECT SEASON AT ARROWHEAD (Chiefs 19, Packers 14) — This was a game that I was also in attendance for and can confirm it was a bad, bad day. The Packers entered the game 13-0. It seemed like the perfect regular season was a foregone conclusion. However, the Chiefs had other plans that day as Kyle Orton threw for 299 yards and spoiled what was supposed to be a wonderful day for Alyssa and her family.

"The Packers had a 19 game win streaking going into Kansas City. I had family who lived in KC, so my family of four with two family friends loaded up the mini van and drove the 9 hours to KC for the game. Only to lose, in the cold, 19-14." — Pick 6 Alyssa

COACH C DAY'S WORST SPORTS MEMORY: GONZAGA FALLS TO BAYLOR IN NATIONAL TITLE GAME (Baylor 86, Gonzaga 70) — Again, this is one of the responses I got back that it is easier to just read than me try to tell. Here you go: "2021 Gonzaga getting boat raced by Baylor after the miraculous shot to win in the Final Four game. Undefeated off of one of the greatest March Madness games of all time. You are set for potentially a championship finally, the 1st for the Zags and instead I had to watch them get dominated for 40 minutes not even having a chance from tip. It was the worst type of loss to scar what was a legendary season. Of course, over time you understand the accomplishments and being able to be the runner up. But in the moment you couldn’t help but feel so empty and powerless as you watch what could have been considered one of the greatest teams of all time with a win just crumble & fall apart. I remember just sitting in silence for basically two hours staring in shock. My wife (gf at the time) knew she just took the dog (whose name was Gonzaga) in the other room waiting for me when I was ready to go to bed."

SANDOS' WORST SPORTS MEMORY: MURRAY'S BUZZER BEATS PROPELS NUGGETS TO 2-0 SERIES LEAD (Nuggets 101, Lakers 99) — Man, this was a crazy game. From what looked like the Lakers were going to be able to manage to salvage a game in Denver turned out to be the turning point of the entire NBA playoffs that year. Down 20 points, the Nuggets slowly chipped away at the Lakers' lead. Jamaal Murray, who had missed 13 of his first 16 shots swished a step-back 15 footer to deliver an improbable come back win.

"This is the year the "Lakers played the Nuggets the best" and got swept. Also Rodgers beating the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Damn, or the AFC championship game where the Steelers lost to the Patriots." — Sandos

As you can tell, he has had some good times as a sports fan.
