Opening Day is one of the best days of the entire year, hands down.
I know every fanbase says this, but in St. Louis it truly means more. Over 44,000 take off work, gather together and celebrate the start of a new season for the Cardinals.
Now obviously the Cardinals are in the beginning of what is likely to be a multi-year rebuild, but that didn't stop fans from showing up at Busch Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
It's a scene like no other with the Clydesdales making an appearance, former Cardinal legends coming back and being honored, and much more.
I've typed this much and still haven't gotten to the best part of Thursday. That was the moment that came in the bottom of the third inning when the Cardinals top prospect and the No. 5 prospect in the MLB JJ Wetherholt crushed a home run for the first hit of his young career.
Baseball is special, man. Hopefully Wetherholt can be a bright spot in what is likely to be a long season for St. Louis. The 23-year-old prospect was a stud at West Virginia and the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft. He found out he was going to The Show just a few days before the start of the regular season (even though it was a terrible kept secret that he would be on the big league roster) and he has made the decision pay off early with the home run and a couple of nice defensive plays.
Whatever the season holds in the 314 this spring and summer, No. 26 is off to a solid start in his big league career.
GO BIRDS!
