Spoilers Warning: Dozen Weekly Recap

OHHHHH the anticipation is building! We’re now seeing the playoff seeds come into place, while seasons are ending for others. This was a fun week for good trivia by Jeff D. Lowe, with the last saved for the best as the Ryders took on the Yak. It’s shocking that the season comes to a close this upcoming week, it’s felt way too fast, for sure. Hopefully, a happy medium can be found for future seasons, but either way, let’s take a look at last week’s matches.

Booze Ponies Find Their Groove into Tourney

The Booze Ponies started the week off by taking down a desperate Macrodosing squad, 18-11. This loss wiped out the slim playoff hopes Macrodosing had, ending their season. Before we go over the Ponies, it must be said: a disappointing year for Macro leaves them heading into an offseason full of questions. One positive? Arian Foster’s late-season charge. If he continues to show improvement, they could surprise folks next year. This will be their first time not making the playoffs, which again leaves them with more questions than answers heading into the break.

As for the Ponies, they now get a shot at the #1 seed against the Experts, and at worst, they'll land nothing lower than the 2 seed. A season of highs, and some old-school lows as well, still ends with a chance at the top spot. A major, scary development for the rest of the league is the emergence of Will Compton lately, with his point totals on the rise. We already know Dana Beers and Feits can bring it, add in Compton scoring points? UH OH. This is setting up for a fantastic regular-season championship this week.

Grinders Dominate Charity Case, Secure Play-In Spot

It was a Liam Blutman legacy game! The Grinders needed a win to stay out of the tangled playoff scenario web, and boy, did they deliver like they had a Hall of Fame coach leading the way. His boys, Jake Malasek and Liam Blutman, dropped 11.7 and 10.7 points in a 19-9 win. This clinches a play-in spot for The Dozen’s newest squad, and it has to scare some of the higher seeds. Jake and Liam are getting better each week, and for a new franchise to make the playoffs? Massive. Just another playoff appearance for Coach Jon Gruden.

As for Charity Case, a hot start to the season ended on a cold note. Still, many believe this squad can figure it out in Year 2. With a champion in Mintzy on the roster, this team always has a chance to pop. Rudy and Gia just need to keep improving around him, and they could absolutely make some noise. An offseason of Daily Dozen training should do the trick.

Classic Finish as Yak Edges Ryders to Avoid Play-Ins

What a way to end the week! A back-and-forth affair full of steals that came down to the last question, as the Yak scored a 13-12 win to lock up the 4 or 5 seed in The Dozen tournament. As for the Ryders, they fall to the 7 seed and will need to win one of two to make it into the tourney. Still, it looks like three new squads in this year’s Dozen will be in the play-ins, a great sign of the league’s depth. The Ryders are a scary low seed, led by Kelly Keegs’ pop culture knowledge. One major X-factor for them: The Rico Effect. Can he find just enough ball knowledge in the next couple of weeks?

As for the Yak, a huge crisis averted, weeks ago, they vowed to boycott the play-ins, and now, they don’t need to. Locked into the 4 or 5 seed, they’re right back in the thick of it. Rone continued his season-long rise with another big game, stepping up in crucial moments where the match could have flipped. Yes, they botched a double on NFL, but outside of that, it was a very clutch team performance from the "bad boys" of trivia. It just wouldn't be a trivia tournament without the Yak in it. June is gonna be a movie.

Now we head into the final week of the season, with some major matchups closing it out and a regular-season championship bout on deck. This is going to be an awesome lead-up to the play-ins next week.

ALSO...tickets are available for the Boston Final Four. You’ve got to get out there and experience The Dozen in person, you won’t regret it. It’s electric and a great way to mingle with fellow stoolies!
