Ovi Stands Alone with 895 Goals

Alexander Ovechkin has done the unimaginable...he has broken #99, Wayne Gretzky’s, all-time goal-scoring record this afternoon with his 895th goal from no other place than his “office” on a power play snipe against the New York Islanders.

The NHL continued its heater of a year by taking the news cycle by storm yet again. With Ovi breaking the record that many thought, among all sports, to be the most unbreakable is of course LEGENDARY in itself. Now let’s add some more drama to the pot...his team is in the hunt for the President’s Trophy (which for casuals, it’s given to the team with the most points earned or best regular season record), has a chance for a second Stanley Cup, and oh yeah... he also broke his freakin' leg early in the season! Most, if not everyone, had counted out the record chase until next season after the early injury. This season is all-encompassing of his whole career as a hockey player, known to Caps fans as RMNB or the Russian Machine Never Breaks.

When records are broken as fans it always makes us think about the journey for us watching. As someone who got into hockey a little later in life. I mean okay, I of course played "NHL Live" back in the day but overall, I didn’t come over to hockey fanhood until my early 20s. So I was basically joining the ranks with no team, and little knowledge to be honest. So of course I gravitated to Ovi and the Caps(also it was my cousins team). He showed me the ropes in hockey fandom is the best ways, digging the hockey hooks into me for good. Now, of course, I felt I hijacked the Caps at the right time as they dominated year in and year out. So I wanted to find a team for me, which then became my Kraken(proud as hell KRAKHEAD!).

Still, I have always kept a close eye on the Caps and Ovi’s chase. The remarkable chase it was, but to me, what makes it even sweeter is every damn goal he has scored was for ONE team. Every highlight you will see over the next few days is all for the Washington Capitals.

In an age of money chasing, win chasing, and little to no loyalty in sports, Ovi did the opposite...he stayed, even through year after year of disappointment, he stayed. His loyalty was then rewarded in a Stanley Cup in 2018. Now he rewards the fans with every record-scoring goal being tied to the "ALL Caps".

The Fun part? There still could be another layer to this story unwritten, as the Caps feel they are primed for a Stanley Cup push in the coming months. With the record broken, now all attention turns to making the dream season into a picture-perfect ending with a Cup hoisting by the NHL’s newest record holder...Alexander Ovechkin, the league’s all-time leading goal scorer. What a nice ring that has to it!
