Thoughts on Les Mascots

ree

Last night was the long awaited premiere of Les Mascots. From the brains of the Out of Order team, we finally got to see episode 1 of Barstools first scripted series. I gotta be honest… I was very nervous as I sat down to watch it. This is the first… I guess, “real” TV show from Barstool. Don’t get me wrong, the Mintzy pro-day was a masterpiece, but this is clearly a higher stakes project than Mintzy bobbing for apples. It was made by the guys who I believe to be the funniest at the company. I really really didn’t want it to suck. First, because Ive needed another show to watch since Survivor ended. Secondly, because idk… I would’ve felt bad for my guys. To spend all that time & energy on something that people respond negatively too fucking sucks. I had the same feeling when I watched my nephew play youth football for the first time. It really wouldt have an effect on my life in any real way… but I still found myself whispering “please be good, please be good”

If you follow me at all, you’ll know I’m pretty much a Barstool glazer. I don’t talk shit about anyone at the company, I tend to support everything they do, & I try to defend people there who are getting attacked unfairly online. I know, I know “get Dave’s cock out of my mouth”. I even get chipped in the Stoolie chat for “not criticizing anyone” weird burn but sure… whatever… fucking sue me cause I’m supportive of the company I want to work for. Call me a pussy cause I don’t have a burner to talk shit about people. That's just not who I am. If I have something to say, you will always see my name next to it. So let’s get into it… & yes, I will be honest.

Within the first 4-5 minutes in I took a sigh of relief. THANK GOD ITS GOOD! I know I just said I don’t talk shit about Barstool employees but I swear it’s fantastic. If I honestly didn’t think so, I would’ve told Coach Day to write this blog & maybe just throw a like or 2 at the promo posts to easy my conscious. Honestly I couldn't recommend it enough.

The episode had good pacing. It had a clear story. They did a great job introducing other characters to us naturally. And most importantly they kept me wanting more. It ran a bit over 20 mintues and I was upset when it was over. The story follows Dustin (Lil Sas) who is studying to be film maker. Tasked with a class project, Dustin moves in with his Uncle Henry (Fiets) to make a documentary style film on the life of a big time actor in NYC. Once there, he quickly realizes that his uncle isn’t a broadway star at all, but “off, off broadway” performers as they put it.

The acting is fantastic. Surprisingly so. Not that I didn’t think my guys were talented but there’s a huge difference between doing sketch’s & making a TV show. Sketches are inherently supposed to be a bit over the top & hyperbolized. As for TV shows, if you want to keep people watching, the characters have to be believable. Their actions & dialogue have to be grounded in reality. Obviously it’s a comedy, so there are some heightened scenes but it’s all very believable. I know real people who act like these characters. I know a Marlon. Delusional, over inflated sense of self… gay. I mean he’s my cousin & I love the guy but he’s literally Marlon.

I found Tommy to be the biggest surprise. Everyone was great but one of my biggest worries was that I thought it would feel like I was just watching Tommy be Tommy. It wasn’t that at all. I immediately felt like I was watching Marlon the character. Nothing felt forced, his line delivery felt natural. He had my biggest laugh of the pilot with his asthmatic moth portrayal. Incredible stuff. Incredibly sincere without being overly dramatic. A+ performance.

Another great scene came from my guys Nick & KB. Nick as the douchey agent & KB as the deeply uncool cool-guy was perfect. All I hear from people at the company is how well liked Nick is. The few times I’ve met & spoke to him, he’s been incredibly kind. Just a joy to be around. With that said… he plays a great asshole. Same with KB. His nickname is literally KB No Swag. But again, his character is kinda swaggy. That's called acting ladies & gentleman. Also side note... Nicks hair is incredible in this show. Guy is the hottest I've ever seen him... and that's including when he wore the singlet.

Also… Fiets is just a star. Everything he does is funny. His cadence, his facial expressions, his body language… just an innately funny individual. I saw on KFC Radio that he said he didn’t love his performance the first couple of episodes. I don’t know why. He was great. If he’s right & the show gets better as it goes, we’re in for a real treat. His character is an idiot, who lacks a grasp of reality but he's also lovable. Its easy to have a character who is hated and makes off colored jokes, and is just a buffoon all the time. Its hard to have a character who has all those qualities but toes the line, and has enough humanity for the audience to root for them. Fiets has that.

The camera work is tremendous as well. Pavs is simply undeniable. I know I said earlier that it was being billed as a real sitcom but holy shit… it really felt like I was watching a “real” sitcom. The city looks beautiful. The actors look beautiful. Just incredibly well done the whole way th

The series is on YouTube & I believe is released weekly. I’m so hyped to keep watching the rest of this first season. I honestly believe this can be the new Tires. If it is… I want to audition for the role of “Fat brown #3” (Pavs… I will be DMing you).

Oh yeah… they even got Ari Shaffir.
