All of North America’s, and the NHL’s, dreams have come true. The Gold Medal game Sunday morning will feature Canada vs. the United States. After two semifinal games with very different stories finished today, all of the hockey world’s eyes are now locked in on what is potentially the most highly anticipated sporting event of the past decade for all of North America.
When the NHL & the IOC came to an agreement to allow NHL players back into the Olympics, we all know this was the dream scenario they had in mind. You then add the setup a year prior with the Four Nations tournament, creating a palpable buzz & the perfect appetizer for what was coming our way in the Olympics. With that Four Nations event, we got a preview of the showdown, the juice was there, even though it was essentially a glorified All-Star event. Now, the two teams with almost identical rosters will face off for the greatest trophy of them all: an Olympic Gold Medal.
Both Canada & the U.S., for the most part, have dominated these games & shown the world they are the two premier teams at the top of the hockey world. We now get the final event of the 2026 Winter Olympics that everyone has wanted. Quinn Hughes vs. Cale Makar, Brady Tkachuk vs. Tom Wilson, Macklin Celebrini vs. Jack Hughes, Connor McDavid vs. Jack Eichel...the list goes on & on with must-see hockey.
As I’ve said before, it has felt like the past 12 months of hockey were all leading up to this moment, and now that it has come to fruition, the game of hockey just continues to grow because of it. The NHL took a gamble in allowing these players to return, stopping their regular season for almost a month for a small percentage of the player pool, & boy has it paid off. Now they will get a best-on-best game in front of an audience with insane numbers. To give you a little measuring stick, the women’s USA vs. Canada gold medal game peaked at 7.4 million viewers. The people are invested & ready to set those alarm clocks a little earlier than usual on Sunday.
There is just something about representing your country that changes the game, & U.S. hockey has always seemed to carry a little extra buzz. Maybe it’s because we all grew up on the movie Miracle, or it’s the way these guys proudly showcase what it means to put on that U.S.A. sweater. It’s a rivalry that may not be talked about much outside of hockey circles, but this one is bigger than you could ever imagine.
With hockey on an all-time heater this Sunday it all comes together. As the Canadians grab their Tim Hortons & we pour our Cinnamon Toast Crunch, buckling in for a game that two nations will be fully dialed for. We are playing for a gold medal & the bragging rights to the hockey crown for the next four years.
