This morning, the news was dropped like a hammer on us that Lee Corso, college football LEGEND in so many ways, will be donning his last headgear to start our 2025 season on August 30th. For many of us, this is a moment we all knew was coming sooner rather than later... but now that it’s official, it just doesn’t seem real man.
Lee Corso has gotten our college football Saturdays started for almost 40 years with his creative antics, catchphrases, and of course,THE mascot headgear for the game of the week. Corso is such a unique sports personality... one of the few who could capture the hearts or laughs of any fanbase he crossed paths with. The man seemed to be immune to any kind of fan hatred. He treated everyone the same with his patented "Not so fast, my friend." It didn’t matter if you were Katy Perry or a little kid... WE all knew he was going to get ya.
Every mascot he encountered, he stood strong...from the Oregon Duck to live pup Dubs, the Washington Husky! He shot guns, recited the Constitutions, and danced Irish jigs. For Corso, no task was too tall...and through every single damn one, he came out the clear cut winner.
Many of us would turn on College Gameday just for his picks, because of his unpredictable nature. You always thought you had a read on his pick...and then BOOM that pencil, gripped tight and pointed out, would shock you yet again.
As a hardcore college football fan myself, I do not know a college football Saturday without Lee Corso (yes, I know he missed some weeks in recent years, but don’t be that guy). This is truly the end of an era, its another door in sports closing to my younger years as a fan. Corso has been a major part of one of the first sports I truly went full fandom on.
And who can forget his connection to EA NCAA Football!!! Just asking him for a play to run? Who didn’t try to win a game only on Corso-called plays?!? DON’T LIE! We all tried at some point. I think we need him in EA CFB 26 now! They have to get him in. Maybe as a guest with a few lines you randomly get in dynasty mode. Who says no to that?? NO ONE.
Yesterday, I wrote about how fanhood for teams and players has forever changed at the college sports level... and now this. It’s a tough time for us fans. Lee Corso is a national treasure to the college football community, and I must say... I’m glad this was announced with enough time ahead for us to cope with the ending of this era.
We can also begin to wonder: will we see headgear again? Will Pat McAfee step in and become the new icon we watch each Saturday morning? These are answers we don’t have yet.
Instead, we have so memories, of waking up, finishing your chores quickly in the crisp fall air, throwing on your team’s hoodie, playing a little NCAA Football before flipping on College Football Gameday to see what Lee Corso had in store this week to jumpstart another beautiful autumn day of pizza, soda, and college freaking football.
Lee Corso, you will be missed more than this blogger’s words can type out, and I thank you for all the memories you've given me...and so many others, in contributing to the love we have for the sport of College Football.
Play him out boys...
