A Friday for...TRITONS!

Through this tourney week, the major conferences haven’t seen as many upsets as we usually do. The games have been great, though, with many close calls. But overall, there’s been a lack of lower seeds making their way to the quarters and semis. BUT! This has now given us a glorious day of basketball ahead, with so many high-level matchups you can barely focus on just one. UNLESS... that one is UC San Diego! That’s right—the Tritons begin their march toward the Big West Championship and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

They are the 1-seed and in the semifinals of the Big West Tournament. They’ll be matched up against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (another solid school name) tonight at 9 PM ET. Now, I’ve been on these boys all season and truly believe that whatever happens tonight or next, they are a tournament team. Unfortunately, the big whigs think differently and instead love to reward 18-15 mediocre-ass squads just because they have one major upset and a bunch of Q1 losses.

Tritons, let's not leave it up to the committee...it’s our time to show the country what’s up! At 28-4, this squad plays an exciting style of ball. But the Gauchos are no easy win...they have 21 wins on the year, including a big victory yesterday in the quarters, so they are definitely hot and ready for an upset.

The key for UCSD is going to be Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones. From New Zealand, this guy is the best player you haven’t heard of. Alongside him are some capable guys as well—Hayden Gray & McGhie—and when this three-headed monster is on, they can be deadly. Tait-Jones, though, is the leader. Averaging 19.7 PPG, they’ll need him to get going early to thwart the upset attempt.

The nerves are high as always for mid-majors in March. Even with a 28-4 record and a KenPom ranking of 39th, this is most likely a win-or-go-home weekend for the Tritons. When you jump on a small school's wagon, you have to know the consequences that lie ahead. But not tonight. UCSD is ready for a fight and wants the chance to play for the Big West Championship tomorrow. Which... that could be another one we need to talk about.

But one game at a time.....our only focus now is the Gauchos! Go Tritons!
