A Sunday at Oakmont for the 125th US Open did not disappoint, as JJ Spaun, who led after round one found himself back in front to secure his life changing moment in winning his first major.

Not only starting the day two shots back, he fell further behind by adding onto his scorecard 5 bogeys before his 9th hole. Then the rain came halting the tournament for almost 2 hours. It became his saving grace while the downfall of basically everyone else on the course. The leader coming into the day Sam Burns just found each hole tougher and tougher. Burns, Adam Scott, Tyrell Hatton, Viktor Hovland, and others all well known names looked like Paul Bissonnette in a sandbagger on national TV just taking bogey after bogey.
Only two players post rain delay looked to have a charge in them, Robert McIntyre from Scotland who posted a low of 1 over, and then the only man to finish in the red Spaun. A US Open that may be hard to forget for many of the competitors as they looked to age years in one afternoon over the mental pretzel Oakmont and the USGA put them in.

As for those falling just short, a huge missed chance for Sam Burns & Viktor Hovland as they are still young, yes. But you can’t help but think with an off leaderboard was this their moment to steal one? You have to feel for both as they are very popular golfers who have had success but the big one still eludes their resumes.
For Spaun on the other hand at +12000 pre tournament and only .03% of the tickets on DraftKings this is truly a Cinderella story and historical moment. For Spaun he not only cements himself into golf history but also may have locked up a Ryder Cup slot this fall. A career changing weekend.
